Mount Cameroon volcano is one of Africa’s largest and most active volcanoes. It is also one of the few volcanoes with dated historic eruptions from BC. The volcano is the most active on a hot spot chain. A volcanic eruption filled our valley with rocks and pozzolans, creating an immense natural filter, through which the water flows. Mount Cameroon is an active volcano in the South West region of Cameroon next to the city of Buea near the Gulf of Guinea. Mount Cameroon is also known as Cameroon Mountain or Fako (the name of the higher of its two peaks) or by its indigenous name Mongo ma Ndemi (“Mountain of Greatness”) It is active till present day. The mountain is one of Africa’s largest volcanoes and with most the frequent eruptions of any West African volcano
The first written account of volcanic activity could be the one from the Cathaginian Hanno The Navigator, who may have observed the mountain in the 5th century BC. He thus named it ”The Chariots of the Gods.”
Explosive and effusive eruptions have occurred throughout history from both summit and flank vents. A 1922 and 1999 eruption on the southwestern flank produced a lava flow that reached the Atlantic coast. The latest volcanic activity on the mountain occurred on the third of February 2012.
